Ben Nye is one of our favourite brands here at Red Carpet FX so we wanted to do a piece on the company’s history, example special FX make-up and why we stock so many of their awesome products. 

 

 

The History

As you might have guessed, the Ben Nye Brandis named after a real person: Benjamin Emmet “Ben” Nye Sr. Ben was born in 1907 and passed away in 1986 after a successful life of building one of the world’s most iconic special FX make-up brand. He was a renowned American make-up artist working in Hollywood for over 40 years. He was working on the sets of over 500 20th Centenary Fox films both within and outside of Hollywood including famous classics such as ‘Gone with the Wind’, Miracle on 34th Street’, ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, ‘The King and I’, ‘The Fly’ and ‘Planet of the Apes’. His brother Carroll Nye was also in the industry and is best remembered as playing Frank Kennedy in ‘Gone with the Wind’ as Scarlett O’Hara’s second husband.

Ben Nye officially ended his career in 1967 and went on to create the Ben Nye Make-up Company which is now run by his son Dana Nye who is also a make-up artist.

By producing more universal products such as foundations, cosmetic powders, eyeshadows and concealers as well as body paint, face paint, halloween themed products, latex, tools and brushes, they have been able to reach a much bigger audience. This has been reflected in their prices also which are appealing to the everyday consumer as well as semi-professionals and professionals alike. Clearly a business model that knows what it’s doing!

 

Examples of the Make-up in Action

Ben Nye Make-up is used by celebrities all over the world for a professional and flawless make-up that is envied by thousands of Instagram users and celebrity culture fans. One example of this is is Kim K - one of the world’s current biggest trend setters. Here we can see her using the Ben Nye Banana Luxury Powder for a more vibrant, contoured look. 

 

Here’s a brilliant example of the versatility of the Ben Nye brand in action. Plastered onto Benedict Cumberbatch’s face, we have Ben Nye’s special FX work at it’s best. A combination of latex and paints, this look is exceptionally realistic and powerful. 

 

This, posted on the Ben Nye Make-up Instagram account shows off how the Ben Nye brand has been used for the Marvel films by incredibly famous and influential make-up artists.
